What Happens to the Roots After a Tree Is Removed?

Just because the tree is gone doesn’t mean the job is finished. Here’s what Arizona homeowners should know.

Tree removal is a big step, but it often leads to even more questions about what’s left behind. One of the most common is, “What happens to the roots after a tree is removed?” The answer depends on the species, soil conditions, and your long-term landscaping goals. Our team at Design Tree Maintenance handles Arizona tree trimming and removal from canopy to roots, so you aren’t left dealing with surprises underground.

Whether you’re preparing for a new tree, addressing a safety issue, or planning landscape upgrades, here’s what to expect once the tree is gone.

Do roots keep growing after removal?

Not exactly. Once the tree is removed, the roots lose access to water and nutrients and begin to decay. That process can take years in Arizona’s dry climate, and in most cases, the roots won’t continue to grow or cause harm.

However, certain species like Sissoo and Acacia are known for producing sucker growth from the roots if the stump is not thoroughly ground. These shoots can show up weeks or even months after removal. For trees prone to suckering, we recommend stump grinding combined with a targeted herbicide treatment to prevent future growth.

If the tree was healthy and not an aggressive species, you may never see any shoots at all. In those cases, the roots simply break down over time without further action.

Will leftover roots damage my yard?

Leftover roots typically do not damage your property, but they can impact future landscaping if not addressed properly. As roots decay slowly, they may affect grading or interfere with plans to install new landscaping features. This is uncommon, but it’s something we evaluate if you’re preparing for sod, pavers, or replanting in the area.

We consider the surrounding root system during the removal process and can recommend appropriate next steps based on your goals, whether that means grinding deeper or removing specific root sections.

Can I plant another tree in the same spot?

Yes, and we do this often. Our team offers rootball extraction services that allow a new tree to be planted in the same location without competition from the previous root mass. This approach removes the underground root structure so your new tree has space and nutrients to thrive.

Rootball extractions are more involved than standard stump grinding, but they create the best conditions for healthy replanting. If your existing location presents challenges due to soil health or nearby utilities, we will help you choose the best alternative location and ensure the new planting follows the principle of “right tree, right place.”

Why stump grinding matters

Stump grinding is a key part of the tree removal process. It removes the visible stump and breaks up the root collar, which is the upper portion of the root system that can continue producing growth. Grinding also levels the area and allows for replanting, reseeding, or hardscaping.

Our crew uses commercial-grade grinders that can reach deep enough to meet the needs of future landscaping. Whether your goal is to replant, install turf, or simply remove all traces of the tree, we tailor the depth and extent of the grind to match your plans.

Removing the tree is just the start

Tree removal is not a one-step task. It’s about ensuring your property is clear, healthy, and ready for what comes next. From sucker-prone species to replanting and rootball extractions, our certified arborists deliver complete Arizona tree removal solutions. We handle everything from stump grinding to root zone assessments and replanting plans with expertise and care.

We hired Design Tree to install a paver patio in our backyard. Very impressed with the outcome and would highly recommend! Beautiful work and the crew was timely and very polite. The superintendent on our job was great, unfortunately I am forgetting his name. Highly recommend this company!

My wife and I have been using Design Tree Maintenance for about 6 years now. They've conducted both removals and long term maintenance on three large trees in our backyard. Each visit from them has left us pleased with their work. The process starts with a free onsite quotation (Nick always does our quotes) and on acceptance, the crew is scheduled within about a week or less. This company is full of professionals during all stages of the process. You can get your trees trimmed for less cost, however having trained arborists quoting and conducting the work is worth every penny. Dago and crew always arrive ready to tackle a tough days work. The crew uses modern safety equipment, everyone has helmets and is well trained to use their climbing, rigging, and cutting gear to get the work sorted quickly and safely. The crew lead reviews all planned work prior to starting to ensure the quoting process has communicated everything correctly to the folks doing the laborious work. When everything is wrapped up, the lead once again reviews the work with you to verify you're satisfied. If you want professionals for your project, call these folks.

I have been a customer for over 10 years. Everyone in this company is professional and cares about their customers. They do our annual tree trimming and we have had them place a French drain and recently landscape the 2 courtyards at the front of the house. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. They exceed my expectations with everything they do. They are worth every penny I’ve paid them and am excited to have them landscape the remaining front yard and then the back.!
